AFC Reacts to News Fortify AZ Will Refocus Efforts

Dallas, TX The AmericanFederationfor Children reacts to news that Fortify AZ will be refocusing its efforts away from the Empowerment Scholarship Accounts Reform and Accountability Act. AFC supported Fortify’s efforts to provide a real reform alternative, with a total of $5.35 million.

The initiative used best policy practices in place in school choice laws in dozens of other states including Texas, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Utah, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and West Virginia.

Statement from Tommy Schultz, CEO, American Federation for Children:

“We supported Fortify Arizona’s efforts as they were the best opportunity to save school choice in Arizona by offering real reforms to voters and protecting the program for its 100,000-plus students; as House Republican leadership staff noted in press Monday, absent our support making it possible for Fortify to gather 250,000 signatures, a deal to save school choice would have never been possible. After a small number of individuals acted to sabotage this chance for the school choice-gutting petition to be pulled and commonsense reforms enacted, we are evaluating our best next steps to ensure the union-backed petition does not rip school choice away from thousands of Arizona students overnight and fundamentally break the program for the rest.”
