PROGRAM — Magnet

English translation below.

I have always believed that education is the key to opening the doors of progress. That’s why I have always been involved in education when it comes to my daughters. When I first moved to Las Vegas, I did not know anyone. I did not know what education programs existed and what the schools were like. My biggest concern was making a good education accessible to us both economically and socially.

My oldest daughter attended public schools, and although she was an excellent student, I wanted something better for her. In 2003, there was not much information about education alternatives. It was not until 2008 that I discovered magnet schools, and I applied for one of my daughters. She was accepted.

She currently attends DSA HS, and my youngest was admitted to Lomie G. Heard Elementary School, which is another excellent magnet school. I immediately saw the results and progress in their thought processes, focus, and the decisive ways in which they faced challenges. This made it clear that I made the right decision to put them both in magnet schools.

However, despite all of this, my daughter Daniella, the youngest, had many difficulties learning this past year because of the pandemic. That is why I looked into other possible options, which would be the best way for her to learn. Although we have had great experiences with the teachers and staff of the schools my daughters have attended, I saw that 2020 had been a very difficult year, not only in health but socially and in school.

I heard about the Opportunity Scholarship and charter schools and was excited about this opportunity, but quickly my joy faded when I learned that the Opportunity Scholarship was closed to new students. I knew that we had to act, so I joined by signing a petition with several parents to raise our voices to activists like Valeria Gurr, and luckily, the Opportunity Scholarships were opened again.

We should have the right to the best education, regardless of our economic, racial, or immigration status. We must train the women and men who will lead our world tomorrow, as people who are empathic and will guard the future. Fortunately, the scholarships were opened again and my youngest daughter started attending a charter school and excelling. I believe that it has also been a wise decision for us as parents.

“All children have the right to an excellent academic education, but not all parents have the resources to grant them the best setting.”

Thanks to the leaders and organizations who have made this reality possible and for listening to our voices.
All children have the right to an excellent academic education, but not all parents have the resources to grant them the best setting. We must empower our children so that they become the men and women who will lead based on moral values, knowledge, and skills that are needed so that the society evolves and rebuilds every day; that is progress and that is what our nation needs. For me, the academic education that we have been able to obtain in these schools is very satisfactory, as they promote teamwork, leadership, and multidisciplinary skills. It allows the children to acquire different capacities and put them into practice early.
