Why did you become an educator? 

I grew tired of seeing the disparities among black students. Black students needed to see someone loving what they do who shows passion and dedication. I also chose to enter the STEM field to be an example to students that women, too, thrive in male-dominated fields. Students spend so much time at school and I strive to build correlation from the classroom to the real world. I not only aim to motivate students to enjoy school, but more importantly, I am to motivate students to enjoy learning.

What do you love about your school?

I love the energy my students bring to the school. While my students grow up in the same neighborhood, they always bring a wealth of knowledge from their unique experiences. These unique experiences are what truly make the classroom an enjoyable, lively place! We address not only the academic needs of scholars, but also the social-emotional needs!

Why is it important that lower income children can attend schools of choice?

I truly believe that all students are capable of learning, however, there are key elements that must be in place. It is vital that lower income children can attend schools of choice so every student is provided with the necessary resources and tools to learn. In addition, students tend to be aware of ways in which they learn best, including environment, both inside and outside of the classroom. When students are given a choice, they are more likely to find purpose and relevance in the work they are doing. They are also more likely to be committed and dedicated, knowing that their voice matters.
