Governor Noem Signs Legislation to Expand Educational Opportunity

The American Federation for Children, the nation’s voice for educational choice, applauds South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem for signing the Partners in Education Tax Credit Program. The legislature recently passed this legislation to expand the state’s tax credit scholarship program.
Statement from Tommy Schultz, Vice President of the American Federation for Children:
“We are grateful for the leadership of Governor Noem, Senator Jim Stalzer, and Representative Jon Hansen. Their relentless work and steadfast support will provide more students in South Dakota with the freedom to attend the school that works best for them.”
Details:

  • The bill removes the requirement that an eligible student needs to have attended a public school in the prior year or that they be entering Kindergarten, first grade or ninth grade
  • Now any income eligible child in any grade, including one already in private school, is eligible to receive a scholarship
