American Federation for Children celebrates launch of Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)

Dallas, TX - The American Federation for Children (AFC) is celebrating a transformative moment in K-12 education – on Wednesday, February 4, at 9:00 am CST, the application window for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) opened for the 2026-2027 school year. The accounts empower Texas families to select the right fit for their K-12 student, whether that means private school, public school, homeschooling, or alternative educational settings.

TEFA accounts can cover tuition, tutoring, therapies, instructional materials, and other expenses. Most students will be awarded $10,474, with up to $30,000 for students with special needs. The billion-dollar program is the largest day-one, state-based school choice program in the country.

AFC urges Texas families to submit their materials when the application window opens Wednesday morning. Importantly, the program is not first-come-first-serve, and applications will be accepted through the closing date of March 17. An application submitted on the last day will have the same chance of success as one submitted on the first day.

Families should visit educationfreedom.texas.gov to submit their application and to get more information on this groundbreaking program.

Statement from Nathan Cunneen, Texas State Director,  American Federation for Children:

“We celebrate with the Texas families, advocates, legislators and other allies who have worked for years to create this historic moment in the school choice movement. Today, Texas families take their first steps toward securing education freedom for their K-12 children – applying for a Texas Education Freedom Account. We are excited for parents to be a part of history and apply for TEFA at educationfreedom.texas.gov as soon as possible.”
