Dr. Valeria Gurr is a Senior Fellow at the American Federation for Children (AFC) and the founder of La Federación Americana para los Niños, an organization committed to expanding access to high-quality education for Hispanic families.
A former teachers union employee, Dr. Gurr is now a nationally recognized leader in educational choice, advocating for policies that empower underserved families. As a first-generation American from Chile, she has firsthand experience with the challenges of poverty and educational inequity. Her mother, a maid who was never taught to read or write, inspired her lifelong dedication to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have access to quality education.
Dr. Gurr has been featured on CNN, FOX News, FOX Business, The Washington Post, and major Spanish-language media outlets such as CNN en Español, Univision, and Telemundo. Her opinion pieces have been published in The Hill, FOXNews.com, Daily Caller, Univision.com, Townhall.com, Washington Examiner, and The Washington Times.
She has led high-profile events alongside governors, members of Congress, and the Vice President, playing a pivotal role in advancing school choice initiatives nationwide.
Dr. Gurr completed her Ph.D. in Public Affairs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 2024. She also earned a master’s degree in journalism and media studies from UNLV and a bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in marketing from Duoc UC of The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She is a recipient of UNLV’s Dottie Shank Service Award and a Phi Kappa Phi honoree for academic excellence
