My name is Samuel Rizzo and I am a sophomore at University Academy of Central Louisiana located on the college campus of LSUA. I have the privilege of attending this private school because of the Louisiana Scholarship Program.
The program has afforded me the opportunity to attend a school with the potential of earning college credits in a real college setting, yet maintaining a traditional high school experience. I can actually earn an associates degree and high school diploma simultaneously. This is the main reason I selected this school.
“I have participated in school activities outside my comfort zone, like student council, student social activities, and the homecoming dance — activities I avoided like the plague in middle school.”
After the completion of my freshman year, I realized there were several reasons why choosing this school was so beneficial to me. First, UA is a small school where the principal, teachers, and staff know every students name. Invisibility is not an option!
Second, I have participated in school activities outside my comfort zone, like student council, student social activities, and the homecoming dance — activities I avoided like the plague in middle school.
Third, our school has a block schedule, which is great for me due to my dyslexia. I can concentrate on learning five subjects per semester, instead of cramming for eight, making learning enjoyable again. No more learning to just take tests, but actually learning the subject!
Lastly, I have made friends that are like-minded which makes school overall a great experience. I have the freedom to be myself in a safe and bully free environment. I feel honored to attend UA and get the real college prep experience because of the Louisiana Scholarship Program.
