Judge Rules in Favor of Missouri School Choice Program

Dallas, Texas – The American Federation for Children celebrates today’s court ruling supporting education freedom for Missouri families. The ruling helps ensure students with disabilities and students from low-income families will continue to receive the funding they deserve to attend the schools that best fit their needs.

The Missouri National Education Association’s litigation put the education of the state’s most vulnerable students at risk. Fortunately, the judge’s decision protects the funding those children need to thrive.

Qualifying Missouri K-12 students’ families can use school choice funds to pay for tuition, textbooks, tutoring, therapy, and other education-related expenses. To qualify, students must be from low-income households or have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Statement from Ryan Cantrell, Chief State Strategy Officer, American Federation for Children

“Missouri families’ triumph over greedy unions couldn’t be sweeter. Children living in poverty and children with special needs are extremely vulnerable. Had our opponents prevailed, those are precisely the groups who would have suffered.

“The union made a shameful, self-serving decision to lodge this suit at the potential expense of Missouri’s kids. In the MNEA’s view, forcing kids out of schools where they are thriving is an acceptable price to pay to advance a political agenda.

“AFC, along with most Americans, believes all children deserve to learn in the environment best suited for them. Today’s wise decision ensures that Missouri families, not unaccountable union bureaucrats, determine what is best for their children.”
