AFC Strongly Condemns Attempt by Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) to Repeal Education Freedom Tax Credit
Dallas, TX – The American Federation for Children strongly condemns the attempt by Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and 29 of his fellow Democratic Senators, to repeal the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) – the landmark law that will put billions of new education dollars directly in the hands of families. 29 states have already opted in, and millions of families are counting on new scholarships starting next year.
The Education Freedom Tax Credit is the nation’s first law that could expand school choice to families in all 50 states, unlocking billions of dollars in new scholarship funding. Passed into law last summer, the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit will provide a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) starting in 2027. SGOs will, in turn, provide school choice scholarships to families.
This attempt to stop it will fail.
Statement from Ryan Cantrell, Chief State Strategy Officer, American Federation for Children:
“Parents, students, taxpayers, and families across America won a historic victory with the passage of the Education Freedom Tax Credit, and now Senator Mark Kelly and 29 of his Democrat colleagues want to take it away from them. The EFTC empowers taxpayers and families to direct K-12 education dollars where they see fit, and 29 states have already embraced it. These Senators should listen to the families who will benefit, not the big schooling unions – the only group who will be celebrating this attempt to turn back the clock. The fact is school choice is wildly popular, and here to stay. We are confident this misguided effort will achieve nothing but reminding parents where their representatives stand.”
