PROGRAM — Nevada Opportunity Scholarship

My name is Zuleika ParraI am the mother of four children. My oldest child, Ricardo, received an Opportunity Scholarship for three years.

Ricardo was in a public preschool near my house. When he was there, I felt like he wasn’t making progress. He was going to school, but he wasn’t really learning anything.

So, I put him in a private school and saw the difference almost immediately. In private school, he learned more things and came back saying the alphabet. I noticed how he was beginning to learn more at the private school.

We are a middle-income family. My husband and I do not have enough money for all four of our children to attend private school. However, we love that in the private school, teachers have fewer students and have the ability to give them more attention.

I understand what it means to have the right to choose. It does not seem fair to me that children whose families don’t have enough income to afford private school, are forced to attend a school that they do not like. I find it discriminatory that children cannot choose which school they want to go to.

If I were in front of the legislators, I would tell them to listen to me, and to think with their hearts. Think about those people who do not have enough money to take their children to the school they prefer. I would tell them that as a parent, we see what is best for our children. Please help us give our children options.

A few months ago, I found out that there would be no more scholarships and without the scholarship, I cannot pay for my child’s private school education. It will be very sad, not just for me, but for so many other desperate families. My child wants to attend Mountain View Christian. What will I do if we don’t have that scholarship? Can the legislators help me?

It is very frustrating to see my children and so many other families who do not have a choice.
