Why did you become an educator?
I became an educator simply because I wanted to make a difference. I saw how the world wasn’t as fair as we may want it to be. So education, I felt, was the key to creating a more fair world by giving kids more choices. Students need teachers who care and want to do the work. I wanted to be a part of that work.
What do you love about your school?
I love that my school’s mission is to create choices for underprivileged areas and students. We are a school that doesn’t believe in giving up on our students. If there is something we can do, we do it! We care about the student and not just about their attendance.
Why is it important that lower income children can attend schools of choice?
It’s important because those neighborhoods that they live in have little to no resources. By getting these kids a real education, with real options, they are able to add wealth to their communities. Gentrification is real and the hope is that if a neighborhood needs to be redone, then it should be done by those who are in those neighborhoods.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Educators I hope you know how special and important you are. We do this because we are great and we chose to, not because we couldn’t do anything else. Because let’s be honest: Every teacher knows this is not for the faint of heart. Also remember why you do it: It’s bigger than us.
