AFC Celebrates with New York Families at News Hochul Will Opt In
The American Federation for Children celebrates alongside families across New York as Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has announced at a private gathering Thursday that the state will opt in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC). For the first time, school choice will soon be available in the state.
The EFTC opens up an opportunity for all governors to expand education opportunity in their states. With today’s news, New York is set to become the 30th state to do so. Hochul will be the second Democratic governor to stand with constituents across the aisle who are eager for this life-changing opportunity.
The federal Education Freedom Tax Credit will provide a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) starting in 2027. SGOs will, in turn, provide school choice scholarships to families.
Statement from Tommy Schultz, CEO, American Federation for Children:
“Finally, school choice is coming to New York, thanks to the courage of Governor Hochul and the tremendous advocacy of countless families, educators, and supporters who have worked for generations to advance options for kids who need them. AFC is proud to have stood behind supporters across the country as they worked toward this ambitious goal. We celebrate alongside every family who will soon, finally, have a chance to access an education that meets their children’s needs.”
