AFC Applauds North Carolina General Assembly for Overriding Veto, Opting State in to Education Freedom Tax Credit
Dallas, TX – The American Federation for Children reacts to the North Carolina General Assembly overriding Governor Josh Stein’s veto of HB 87, a bill that officially opts the state in for the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC). North Carolina is now the 31st state to opt in for the EFTC or express intent to do so.
Signed into law last summer, the EFTC will take effect in 2027 and provide up to a $1,700 dollar-for-dollar credit for taxpayers who donate to qualified scholarship granting organizations. It is a monumental step in the right direction to bring school choice to all 50 states in America.
Statement from Ryan Cantrell, Chief State Strategy Officer, American Federation for Children:
“Governor Stein’s veto was a disappointment, given the opportunity the Education Freedom Tax Credit presents to help North Carolina families. The General Assembly’s vote to override the veto expands families’ access to the schools where their children can best thrive and critical education resources. We commend Senator Phil Berger, Speaker Destin Hall, and legislative leaders across the aisle for their commitment to school choice and expanding North Carolina’s vision for education freedom.”
