AFC Mourns Education Reform Champion Rod Paige

The American Federation for Children mourns the passing of education reformer and former Secretary of Education Rod Paige, an innovative education leader and dedicated public servant who worked to expand opportunity for all students. His commitment to empowering parents leaves a legacy for American education that will last for generations.

Statement from Kevin Chavous, Board Member, American Federation for Children:

“Rod Paige’s life and work embody the best of the American spirit. From his humble beginnings, he understood deeply the power of a good education and access to opportunity regardless of means. This understanding fueled his lifelong mission to open doors for students, especially those in communities most in need. As Houston ISD superintendent, he showed the country what bold leadership and high expectations can achieve, and when he made history as the first Black Secretary of Education, he carried that same conviction to the national stage, championing accountability, choice, and the belief that every student deserves access to a great school. Rod Paige leaves a legacy that we work to carry on: to fight for the kids whose dreams depend on us getting this work right.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
