AFC Hires Fifth Future Leaders Fellow
We are excited to announce that Gissell Vera, a 2020 Future Leaders Fellow, has joined AFC full time as Outreach Associate. A beneficiary of the Milwaukee School Choice Program, Gissell attended Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, where she went on to graduate as valedictorian, prior to attending and graduating from Marquette University. In her new role, Gissell will conduct outreach to communities in need of choice.
In 2018, the American Federation for Children launched the Future Leaders Fellowship, and in the six years since, we have welcomed 52 remarkable young men and women into the yearlong program. These Fellows, school choice beneficiaries who can speak directly to its power and potential, have testified in legislative hearings across over a dozen states and U.S. Congress, appeared in local and national media, and been featured as speakers at countless events. They have become advocates in their own communities, they inspire us while propelling the movement forward – and they continue to join AFC as full-time advocates for the policies that changed their lives.
Gissell joins Walter Blanks, Jr., Nathan Cunneen, Ashley Elliott, and Hera Varmah as Future Leaders Fellow alumni who have joined the AFC team full time.
Statement from Tommy Schultz, CEO, American Federation for Children: “The Future Leaders Fellowship is the best of our movement. Each and every remarkable young leader proves the potential of school choice and the power of what we fight for every day, and we are thrilled to have had so many of these leaders join AFC. Gissell’s story is a testament to her incredible strength and resilience and to the potential that school choice brings to talented young leaders like her. We are thrilled to have her join our team.” |
