AFC Celebrates Texas Governor Greg Abbott Opting into Federal Scholarship Tax Credit

The American Federation for Children applauds Governor Greg Abbott for announcing his intent to opt in to the newly created federal scholarship tax credit and offer even more school choice to Texas students and parents. This is on the heels of Texas passing the nation’s largest day-one school choice program earlier this year.

The federal scholarship tax credit unlocks an opportunity for every governor to expand school choice, and with Wednesday’s announcement, Governor Abbott is among the first to confirm his intention to do so, making Texas the largest state to opt in.

Set to take effect in 2027, the law will allow every American taxpayer to receive a dollar-for-dollar credit up to $1,700 for contributing to state-based scholarship granting organizations (SGOs). The FSTC is a monumental step toward bringing school choice to every state.

Statement from Tommy Schultz, CEO, American Federation for Children

“School choice has come to Texas, and with this announcement, Governor Abbott signals his unwavering support for education freedom, yet again. AFC is proud to have joined Texas parents and lawmakers for years as they fought for better education options and celebrated alongside them as Texas passed the nation’s largest day-one school choice program earlier this year. With today’s announcement, it’s clear that education freedom will continue to advance in Texas. We applaud Governor Abbott and celebrate with every Texas parent who has fought for a better education for their children.”
