AFC Celebrates Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen Opting into Federal Scholarship Tax Credit

The American Federation for Children applauds Governor Jim Pillen for announcing his intent to opt in to the newly created federal scholarship tax credit and offer school choice to Nebraska students and parents who have long fought for it.

The federal scholarship tax credit opens up an opportunity for every governor to expand school choice, and with Monday’s announcement, Pillen is among the first to confirm the intention to do so.

Set to take effect in 2027, the law will allow every American taxpayer to receive a dollar-for-dollar credit up to $1,700 for contributing to state-based scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) and is a monumental step toward bringing school choice to every state.

Statement from Tommy Schultz, CEO, American Federation for Children

“School choice is coming to Nebraska and soon, to every state. AFC is proud to have stood alongside Nebraska parents and lawmakers for years as they fought for better education options against often overwhelming odds and a power structure with no intention of giving up its monopoly. With today’s announcement, it’s clear that these efforts will prevail. We applaud all the bold champions in the legislature, Governor Pillen, and most of all, every Nebraska mom and dad who stood up for something better for their kids.”
