AFC Applauds Kentucky Legislature for Overriding Veto, Opting State in to Education Freedom Tax Credit
DALLAS, TX – The American Federation for Children celebrates with Kentucky parents today as the state is now opted in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit, thanks to the Kentucky legislature’s successful override of Governor Beshear’s veto of HB1. The Kentucky Senate voted today to override the veto, following the House’s override vote on Monday.
Signed into law in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the federal scholarship tax credit will take effect in 2027 and provide up to a $1,700 dollar-for-dollar credit for taxpayers who donate to qualified scholarship granting organizations. It is a monumental step in the right direction to bring school choice to all 50 states in America.
Statement from Ryan Cantrell, Chief State Strategy Officer, American Federation for Children:
“Despite empty rhetoric, Governor Beshear made it clear by opposing the Education Freedom Tax Credit in Kentucky that he takes his marching orders from the big schooling unions. We applaud the Kentucky legislature for stepping up for families and students and overriding the Governor’s misguided veto. The Kentucky legislature is committed to empowering families and students with school choice, while ensuring taxpayers can contribute to scholarship granting organizations in their home state. This move is a no-brainer for Kentucky taxpayers, families, and most importantly, students.”
