AFC Applauds Kansas Legislature for Opting in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit
Dallas, Texas – The American Federation for Children (AFC) today applauds the Kansas legislature for opting in to the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) by overriding Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of Senate Bill 361. With this action by the legislature, Kansas becomes the 29th state to opt in to the EFTC.
Passed into law last summer, the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit will provide a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) starting in 2027. SGOs will, in turn, provide school choice scholarships to families.
Statement from Ryan Cantrell, Chief State Strategy Officer, American Federation for Children
“We applaud the Kansas legislature for backing families by opting in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit after Governor Kelly’s unfortunate veto. Thanks to the legislature’s relentless efforts, Kansas now joins 28 other states in giving families access to new scholarships and ensuring Kansas taxpayers can contribute to scholarship granting organizations in their home state starting next year. As always, AFC will continue to fight for families, in Kansas and beyond, until school choice is available to every family.”
