My name is Dulce Alcalá and I am the mother of a boy who is in his 11th grade year at Mountain View Christian, a private school located on the east side of the Las Vegas Valley. This is an area characterized by a high density of families of Hispanic origin, many of whom, like me, are working families.
When the principal of Mountain View Christian School came to give us information in the church about the Opportunity Scholarship program, we liked it. I remember saying to my son: “We are going to apply for this scholarship.” Eventually, they accepted us.
The Opportunity Scholarship really gave us a good opportunity.
I was very afraid of bullying, because when I was a young girl, my older brother was also bullied. My son has the same personality as my brother: quiet and noble. So I was very afraid that something similar would happen to my child.
When I did the tour of this school, I really liked the way their classes were developed. When I saw the classrooms, I thought my child was going to love this! I knew right away that in an environment like that, my son was going to develop his skills and channel them wisely.
Today, he receives much more individual attention as a student in order to make progress.
As a single mom, I couldn’t pay for the expenses of a private school. Sometimes it is not enough, but I do try to give it my best. After visiting different schools, I decided to put him at Mountain View Christian, even if it wasn’t the cheapest and the amount was a little bit higher. I felt that it was the best option for him.
Currently, my son has many more opportunities and I believe that legislators should consider that, give the opportunity to our students who have the ability to get ahead and demonstrate those hidden talents.
