I am a mother of three: María Laura, who is in the eighth grade, Natalie Elías, who is in the fifth grade and Christopher Elías, who is in the second grade.
My children used to attend a public school, but then my husband and I found out about the Opportunity Scholarships, and we were lucky enough to get them.
Maria likes to focus a lot on school and has almost no friends, she was bullied a lot before in public school because she spent her time studying hard and was very selective with her friends. She hardly talked, and she was bullied since fourth grade. We told the administration about the bullying, but they never did anything about it.
My children’s grades in public school were low. Now, they are doing very well in their new school, and their grades have increased a lot. I am pleased. When classes started, the kids were excited to go to school because they are treated better, and they have learned so much.
My husband and I could not do this alone because we do not have the funds to support our children without the Opportunity Scholarships.
When we found out that they could lose their scholarships, I told my children that we cannot afford for them to attend their current school without the scholarships, and they may have to go back to public school. Not one of my kids wants to go back.
Legislators, I know that these children’s lives are in your hands. Perhaps in the future, they will help your children or grandchildren, perhaps these children will be future legislators, and they will help our communities. What they learn in this school is instilled in them and launches them towards a better future.
I always tell my kids that they can become President of the United States, and then it will be their job to help those who are most in need. At this moment, it is in the hands of the legislators to help us, and we will thank them for the rest of our lives.

Soy una madre de tres, ella es María Laura que está cursando el octavo grado, Natalie Elías que está cursando el quinto grado y Christopher Elías que está cursando el segundo grado, ellos anteriormente asistían a una escuela pública, María comenzó a ir a la Middle School, pero mi esposo y yo tratamos cuando nos enteramos de las becas escolares, de que nuestros hijos logran obtenerlas, como ella (María) le gusta enfocarse mucho en la escuela y casi no tiene amigos, es muy difícil de que ella tenga amistades y le hacen mucho bullying anteriormente en la escuela pública por que se la pasaba estudiando mucho y era muy selectiva con sus amigos casi no platicaba, y ella tenía ese miedo desde que iba en cuarto grado le comenzaron a hacer bullying a ella y siempre se lo comunicaba a los directores pero nunca me hacían caso.
Mis hijos iban muy bajos en sus notas escolares, porque también los señalaban mucho.
Ellos van muy bien y han subido increíblemente sus notas ella (Natalie) de estar por un siete ahora me saca de nueve a diez y estoy muy contenta de hecho cuando comenzaron las clases ellos estaban emocionados de venir a la escuela porque aquí son tratados diferente, el nivel escolar es diferente, ellos han aprendido demasiado lo que ni yo a su edad y les pregunto ¿Cómo es que te están enseñando esto ahora? Y me dice: si mami, nos están enseñando esto y no es que yo no lo sepa lo que me sorprende es que aquí es otro nivel.
Nosotros mi esposo y yo no podríamos, porque no tenemos el nivel económico para sustentar estas becas.
Emocionalmente yo se que ellos no podría, yo se que como ellos ya se acomodaron aquí se podría decir, ellos bajarían sus notas. Por que cuando nos enteramos de que se podrían perder las becas yo se los comenté a ellos que sí probablemente no nos dieran la beca nosotros no podríamos solventar el pago y le dije que podrían regresar a la escuela y ellos dijeron “yo no quiero regresar”
Que por favor se toquen el corazón que yo se que en sus manos está que muchos de estos niños y quizá en un futuro ellos van a ayudar a sus hijos o nietos, ellos van a ser legisladores y que van a ayudar a sus comunidades también por que eso es lo que les inculcan en esta escuela y en las escuelas privadas.
Yo siempre les digo que ellos pueden llegar a ser presidente de los Estados Unidos y en sus manos va a estar ayudar a los más necesitados, en este momento está en las manos de los legisladores ayudarnos y ellos se los van a agradecer por el resto de su vida.
