PROGRAM — Charter School

Why did you become an educator?

I became an educator because I know firsthand how inspiring educators can be for students. I attended a total of 16 schools during my primary and secondary education. I had so many teachers and a lot of them helped shape the way I thought about my life and choices. My teachers changed the course of my education for the better and I want to pay that forward.

What do you love about your school?

I love that my school is a strong community and is consistent. My coworkers are all part of the team and feel like family. The students know they can depend on their teachers for almost anything and know what to expect when they walk into a classroom, no matter whose it is.

Why is it important that lower income children can attend schools of choice?

Most often, low income students attend schools that they’re zoned too, and those aren’t always the best choices because they might not offer certain programs or electives. Students should be able to choose the school that will most help them in their education and that will allow them to explore their passions. If they want to attend a school that has a great theatre program because they’re passionate about the visual arts, or a school that offers higher-level sciences because they want to become doctors, they should be able to. Low income students cannot afford to be enrolled in acting classes, if that’s what they enjoy, or to go to a science camp over the summer. Schools of choice is where they are able to get these opportunities. We should not be holding students back, we need to do everything in our power to push them forward.
