Carra Powell is a leading grassroots community organizer and legislative consultant in the education policy arena with 17 years of experience collaborating with organizations and community groups across Southeast Tennessee around issues of parental engagement and school choice.
She is currently the Tennessee Grassroots Coordinator for the American Federation for Children. Prior to joining the American Federation for Children, she coordinated the Mississippi Black Alliance for Educational Options’ (BAEO) efforts to increase educational access and was instrumental in the passage of MS House Bill 369, Mississippi’s Charter School Act. She is now spearheading a rigorous grassroots and legislative campaign to pass the Tennessee Choice and Opportunity Scholarship Act.
As the mother of three children—Sydney, 15; Nicholas, 14; and Sophia, 10—she understands intimately the importance of parental choice and educational access for children. In all of her work, Powell’s goal is to give a voice to the voiceless.
