Opportunity Scholarship Legislation Continues Momentum, Moves One Step Closer to Floor Vote
NASHVILLE, TN – Today, legislators on the House Finance, Ways & Means Committee voted to stand with Tennessee families and children. The committee passed The Choice and Opportunity Act – which would expand educational choice and options to thousands of children. The legislation moves one step closer to a floor vote.
The legislation – HB 1049 – allows low-income students enrolled in the state’s lowest performing schools to have the option to attend the private school of their choice.
Tennessee Federation for Children State Director, Tony Niknejad, is encouraged by the momentum. “Enacting Opportunity Scholarships will expand access to educational opportunities for Tennessee families,” said Niknejad. “Too many students are trapped in schools that fail them. Every child, regardless of their ZIP code or finances, should have the right to seek out the best education possible.”
Niknejad continues, “We are proud of lawmakers who voted to empower families who are stuck in one of Tennessee’s five failing school districts with the choice to seek an alternative high-quality educational option for their children. With growing support for Opportunity Scholarships in both political parties, we are one step closer to providing a lifeline to Tennessee families in need.”
The Tennessee Federation for Children, the state’s voice for educational choice, believes that education is a fundamental right for every child and seeks to empower families to find the education that works best for their child.
