Rev. Matthews has been involved in the Civil and Human Rights Movement since the early 1960s and has worked with many civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ralph Abernathy, and Rev. Hosea Williams. He participated in the Selma to Montgomery March and was named the #1 political prisoner in America by the National Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1978.
