Alabama Federation for Children Applauds State Supreme Court for Affirming the Constitutionality of the Alabama Accountability Act
MONTGOMERY, AL. (March 3, 2015) – The Alabama Federation for Children, the state’s voice for educational choice, applauds the ruling today from the Alabama State Supreme Court affirming the constitutionality of the Alabama Accountability Act.
“We are thrilled for the nearly 3,000 low-income, mostly minority students who are currently exercising educational choice through programs created by the Accountability Act and the many students that will continue to have that option in the future” said Chad Mathis, Chairman for the Alabama Federation for Children. “Now that the litigation process has ended, hopefully we can get past political arguments and judge the program by its effectiveness in helping students every day in communities all across the state of Alabama.”
In today’s decision, the Alabama Supreme Court upheld all aspects of Alabama’s school choice program. During the 2013 Regular Legislative Session, The Alabama Legislature passed the Alabama Accountability Act, creating the state’s first educational choice programs. During the first full year of the Tax Credit Scholarship Program, more than 12,000 families applied for nearly 3,000 scholarships for students to attend the school of their choice. The Accountability Act also created the nation’s first Individual Tuition Tax Credit for families with students in failing schools.
“We are thankful to the Justices of the Alabama State Supreme Court for seeing this lawsuit for exactly what it was – a veiled attempt by the Alabama Education Association to keep the status quo in education and prevent parents from making decisions that best suit their children,” said Mathis.
The Alabama Federation for Children is the state-based affiliate of the American Federation for Children.
