Alabama Educational Choice Candidates Prevail

State’s biggest teachers’ union spends big, comes up short

The American Federation for Children, the nation’s voice for educational choice, celebrated Tuesday’s primary election results in Alabama. Despite the Alabama Education Association (AEA) spending more than $4.5 million in the primary election, educational choice candidates were successful, and AEA failed to outright win a single senate race, causing only one senate runoff. In two key senate races, despite being out spent, Alabama Federation for Children PAC (affiliate of the American Federation for Children) endorsed candidates prevailed.

“There is an education revolution underway in Alabama and last night’s election results serve as reminder that Alabama parents recognize and support their right to exercise educational choice,” said Betsy DeVos, chairman of the American Federation for Children. “I want to congratulate all of the educational choice candidates and thank them for their courage to fight the status quo and put the interests of students and parents first. I also want to recognize and thank our strong allies, StudentsFirst, Business Council of Alabama and the 2014PAC.”

Additional details about the results can be found in the following memo: 06-04-14 Alabama Election Memo.

The American Federation for Children is the nation’s leading school choice advocacy organization and works in states across the country to help secure additional, high-quality educational options for families.
