AFC Kicks off of 41 Days of School Choice – Day 1: Kansas is the 19th State to Allow Educational Freedom

Washington, DC (August 4, 2014) – As summer winds down and the back to school season kicks into full swing, the American Federation for Children (AFC), the nation’s voice for educational choice, is kicking off its 41 Days of School Choice initiative to celebrate the 41 different school choice programs available to children across the country. For the next 41 days, AFC and its educational choice allies will highlight one program, including notable facts, stats and success stories.
“Back to school is the perfect time to celebrate the growth and momentum in the educational choice movement,” said Betsy DeVos, chairman of the American Federation for Children. “Ten years ago there were programs in only five states and the District of Columbia – today, there are 41 programs in 19 states. Each voucher and scholarship represents a parent exercising their right to choose the best educational environment for their child – a right that should not be debated and should never be denied.
The first program to be celebrated is Kansas’ new scholarship tax credit program. Kansas is 19th state and 40th program.
“Kansas’ new scholarship tax credit program will empower parents and provide children with the necessary educational options they deserve,” added DeVos. “I want to applaud Gov. Brownback for his leadership and commitment to helping low-income and special needs children.”
The Corporate Education Tax Credit Scholarship Program provides $10 million in state tax credits to businesses that donate money to nonprofit organizations that provide scholarships to students that qualify for the federal free or reduced-priced lunch program as well as students with special needs, to attend the private school of their parents’ choice.
