AFC Applauds Selection of Gov. Mike Pence as GOP Vice Presidential Candidate

The American Federation for Children, the nation’s voice for educational choice, congratulates Indiana Governor Mike Pence on his selection as the GOP Vice Presidential candidate. Governor Pence is a longtime champion for educational choice, believing that every child, regardless of family income or ZIP code, deserves access to a quality education.

“Mike Pence has been leader in advancing bold education reform, including supporting all educational options for children, both in Congress and as Governor of Indiana,” said Betsy DeVos, chairman of the American Federation for Children. “Our country needs leaders who will challenge the status quo of K-12 education. Governor Pence has a proven record of accomplishment when it comes to advancing educational choice and innovation, which are critically important to improving educational outcomes for all students in America.”

As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 6 terms, Governor Pence was an outspoken supporter of greater choice in education, including the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, the nation’s only federally funded voucher program. As Governor of Indiana, Pence has built on the education reforms that began under former Governor Mitch Daniels. Indiana has been a national leader in advancing comprehensive education reform, including the Choice Scholarship Program, which serves nearly 33,000 children from low- to middle-income families. Under Governor Pence’s leadership, the state’s school choice programs have been expanded in both funding and eligibility. Last year, voucher amounts were increased by as much as $2,000 per student in grades K-8 and the scholarship tax credit program’s cap was increased by $2 million over 2 years, giving even more opportunities for students to receive a quality education.
