41 Days of School Choice: Day 27 – New Hampshire Education Tax Credit Program

Washington, D.C.  (September 10, 2014) – The American Federation for Children, the nation’s voice for educational choice, celebrates Day 27 of the #41Days of School Choice initiative highlighting New Hampshire’s Education Tax Credit Program.

The program was recently ruled Constitutional by the New Hampshire State Supreme Court, allowing students to utilize the program for both private school tuition and homeschooling curriculum costs.

Enacted in 2012, the Education Tax Credit Program allows scholarship organizations to provide up to $2,500 for scholarships to children in grades k-12 from low-income families. The bill allows businesses to receive a tax credit equal to 85 percent of their donations and includes a statewide cap of $5.1 million in the program’s second year. In any year that 80 percent of the statewide cap is reached, the cap will increase by 25 percent.

“New Hampshire’s Education Tax Credit Program is making a difference in the lives of low-income students,” said Kevin P. Chavous, executive counsel for the American Federation for Children. “Students taking part in the program are achieving goals their families most likely never thought possible. These students are breaking down barriers of inequality and are ensuring a brighter future for themselves and the state.”

Program Facts:

  • To be eligible for participation in the program, family income cannot exceed 300 percent of the federal poverty guideline ($70,650 for a family of four in 2013)
  • Private school and home school students are also eligible
